new lunchbot: robohobo

•August 5, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I’m finally caught up enough to resume the Lunchbots I promised to all the kind folks who donated at least $25 to help my friend Fran pay for medical treatment to cure her chronic late stage Lyme disease since she has no insurance. How’s that for the longest run-on sentence ever? This is for a coworker Chris’ sister who wanted a drawing of a homeless robot. This economy is tough on everyone.

Another new series. This one I call finger puppet portraits. I bought a bunch of finger puppets that I used as models for these. You can see a picture of me making one (my wife snuck up on me and took these without me realizing it). I have several so I’ll just post ’em a few at a time. Chalk, paint pens and pencil on a canvas of either black photo mounting paper or clear plastic (the cover that came in the frames to protect whatever picture you put in the frame) painted with chalkboard paint, framed in a wooden picture frame.

introducing tarotbots

I was going to make a series of 20 of these, but so far I only have three. I call this series Tarotbots… a robotic reinterpretation of the tarot. Paint pens, pencil, printer paper, construction paper, electrical tape, mounted on grocery bag paper. It’s part of my Disposable Drawings green art method. Reduce, re-use, robot. (Though technically the only re-used material here is the grocery bag paper… I get an N for NiceTryWiseGuy.)

the portal series

And now for something completely different. I was doing 20 new pieces for the Gawker Art Show in NY. I did a series of finger puppet portraits that I will add later, as there’s many of them, and I also did a few Tarotbots, which are robotic reinterpretations of tarot cards, but those proved to be far more time-consuming than originally anticipated and I only ended up doing 3 of those. Then I did this short series that I call, “Portal” which unfortunately there wasn’t room for it in the show so I’m showing it for the first time right here, right now.

I wanted to depict that feeling I think most of us have, of seeking, of trying, of finally finding. For many of my earlier years, I felt like I was searching for something that was missing, and this series symbolizes that universal journey. Seeking meaning, seeking purpose, seeking love, seeking that missing piece or that healing or forgiveness or resolution or muse or closure or, you get the idea.  I decided to do it in a chalkboard style, similar to the finger puppet portraits which I’ll post here later.  Something about it reminds me of some Led Zeppelin album cover artwork I’d seen long ago, which may have given me a bit of inspiration for this character in this new series. So without further rambling, I give you, Portal.
